الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا عبارة عن مجموعة من الدراسات لعدد كبير من المصاحف الأثرية، المغربية والسودانية والإفريقية والعثمانية، المحفوظة في مكتبات بعض المدن الليبية (بنغازي، ماسة، البيضاء) والسعودية (مكة المكرمة، المدينة المنورة) ترجع للقرون الأربعة الماضية (1-14 هـ / 18-20 م) تمت دراستها من وجهة النظر الأثرية الفنية الوثائقية، وفق المناهج الوصفية التحليلية المقارنة، وهذه المصاحف في مجملها لم يسبق نشرها من قبل، ولذلك أضافت الجديد من المعلومات فيما يخص أسماء خطاطين جدد هم تلاميذ لخطاطين قدامي مشهورين، كما أضافت أسماء أماكن تحرير بعض هذه المصاحف في مدن تركية أو مغربية أو من جنوب الصحراء الكبري في نيجيريا وغيرها، هذا فضلا عن القيمة الأثرية لهذه المصاحف بما في بعض خواتيمها من تواريخ هجرية واضحة، أو وثائق الوقف علي الحرمين الشريفين.
