شخصية (ويليام ستونر) فستونر يبدو لنا إنسانا مفرغا يعيش حياة هادئة شكلا فارغة مضمونا رغم أنه حقق ما يحلم الكثيرون في تحقيقه صار بروفسورا في جامع تزوج ورزق بابنة تبدو هذه حياة ناجحة جدا في نظر الكثيرين ولكن عندما نتجاوز السطح والظاهر ونحاول التعمق نصدم بنوع من الفراغ نوع من اختفاء الإنسانية نوع من اختفاء الشغف في حياة ستونر نراقب كيف يذهب ستونر لدراسة الزراعة ليعود فيعين والده ووالدته في مزرعتهم ثم كيف يحول دراسته إلى الأدب كيف يذهب أصدقاؤه للحرب العالمية الأولى ويموت أحدهم هناك ولكنه لا يذهب يلتقي بفتاة فيتزوجها ولكن علاقتهما لا تسير بشكل طبيعي يرزقان بطفلة يعيش حياة جامعية هادئة حتى يصطدم بأحد زملائه والذي يقف في وجه ترقيته ولسنوات طويلة وكيف يقوم بلعبة سياسية ليستعيد شيئا من حقوقه.
