يتناول الكتاب أنه في بدايات القرن العشرين ظهرت مدارس جديدة وعلى رأسها مدرسة التحليل النفسي للعالم فرويد وظهرت اختبارات جديدة لأول مرة مثل اختبارات الذكاء والشخصية فيما بعد، مما أرسى قاعدة هامة في عملية التشخيص الإكلينيكي والدينامي والسكودينامي ومحاولة إعطاء الشخصية التي تواجه مشكلة أو اضطراب نوعا من الصورة الواضحة عن أعراضها ومؤشرات تدلل على حالتها ووصفها وتصنيفها وكذلك تأويل وتفسير شخصية المسترشد بصورة نهائية. وتعد عملية التشخيص عملية جمع بيانات ومعلومات حول الفرد وتنظيم هذه المعلومات وتبويبها وتفسيرها واستنباط أفضل الطرق والوسائل للتعامل معها ومع الحالة في ضوء ما هو متوفر من معلومات ومؤشرات.
