يسعى هذا الكتاب إلى قراءة جديدة لفكرة وواقع العلاقة بين الغرب والشرق أو الإسلام والغرب أو الحضارة الغربية والحضارة الإسلامية، وبمختلف تلك التسميات فيما بينها، اذ نسعى أن نبين اهم ملامح تلك العلاقة واليتها وما هي النظريات التي طرحت لتصفها أو تستشرف مستقبلها، وكانت فكرة الحضارة كمركز أو محور لتفسير العلاقة حاضرة في كتابنا لأغراض عدة منها حداثة الدراسات المنظوية تحت هذا العنوان بالإضافة إلى ما تمثله لفظة الحضارة-كما نرى-من تمثيل لهوية شعوب ومجتمعات ممكن أن يتم التعامل من خلالها مع الآخر.
