يضم الكتاب أربعة فصول، يتناول الفصل الأول المبحث الأول الغياب في التناص. أما المبحث الثاني فقد ضم التناص. واحتوى الفصل الثاني على الغياب في الرمز الشعري، وتناول المبحث الأول الرموز المطورة منها. أما المبحث الثاني فقد احتوى على الرموز الشخصية. وتناول الفصل الثالث الغياب في الصورة الشعرية. واختتم الفصل الرابع أنماط أخرى للغياب في الشعر العراقي الحديث بثلاثة مباحث الأول : الحذف الغيابي، إما المبحث الثاني فقد كان بعنوان المفارقة الشعرية، والمبحث الثالث تحدث عن الانقطاع.
