اقتضت طبيعة الموضوع أو حجم المادة المهيأة للدراسة أن يسلك في ثلاثة فصول وخاتمة عن النتائج التي آل إليها العمل وقد استوى الفصل الأول على قسمين تحدث الأول منهما عن بيئة ابن الخطيم (يثرب) الجغرافية والاجتماعية والدينية والأدبية، في حين عقد القسم الثاني منه لأسم الشاعر ونسبته وأسرته وصفاته وأخلاقه من فروسية وشجاعة وكرم وعفة، ثم ركن الحديث إلى مطالبته بالثأر ومصرعه وأيام قومه، واختتم الفصل بالكلام عن منابع شاعريته ومنزلته في الشعر وديوانه، وكان مدار الفصل الثاني موضوعات شعره التي كان الفخر يحتل مكان الصدارة منها.
