يتناول الفصل الأول من هذا الكتاب الطفل بطيء التعلم إذا يشير إلى قاعدة تقول أن قليلا من السلوك الإنساني يعود إلى الغريزة إذ أن معظم سلوك الإنسان ناتج عن التعلم وهذا يبين لماذا كان التعلم أهم أقسام علم النفس ثم يناقش أسباب بطء التعلم حيث يعزوها إلى تراكم صعوبات التعلم أثناء المراحل الدراسة المختلفة، كما أشار إلى القصور العقلي وخصائصه الجسمية. وفي الفصل الثاني احتل موضوع مناهج الطفل بطيء التعلم الحيز الأكبر منه لوجوب أن تتكيف هذه المناهج وفق حاجة هذا الطفل ومراعاة حالته النفسية وحتى يتحقق ذلك يجب مراعاة الوجه العلاجي والوجه الوقائي والوجه النمائي حيث يؤكد ضرورة الاعتماد على الوجه الوقائي والنمائي مع ما يتلاءم مع مستوى قدرات المتعلم الفعلية.
