تقدم الرواية صورة للواقع الاجتماعي الذي ساد فلسطين في أواخر الحكم العثماني وإلى ما بعد الاحتلال الإسرائيلي لكامل فلسطين التاريخية عام 1967، ألقت الرواية الضوء على جوانب من حياة عائلة فلسطينية تقليدية. فالزواج يكون أساسا بين الأقارب مثل سليمان التي تزوج عطاف ابنة قريبه طالب، وفهمي الذي تزوج سميرة إبنة عمه عطا، وشوقي الذي تزوج نجلاء إبنة خاله سليمان. الإبن الأكبر يتحمل أعباء مساعدة الأسرة، كما حدث مع عط ابن سليمان، الأم عاقر وإن أنجبت بنات ولم تنجب الأولاد. احترام الأب في جميع الأحوال مهما كانت صورته وأخلاقه وتعامله مع أهل بيته وغيرهم.
