يتناول هذا كتاب عددا من المسائل المتصلة بالسرد العربي عن طريق الدراسة التحليلية النصية للحكاية، والرواية العربية، فهو يقف لدى بعض الروايات التي صدرت في زمن مبكر مثل رواية غسان كنفاني \"رجال في الشمس\"، ورواية حليم بركات \"ستة أيام\"، ورواية \"موسم الهجرة إلى الشمال\" للطيب صالح، ورواية \"عرس الزين\" للمؤلف ذاته، ورواية \"سلطانة \" لغالب هلسا. وبعضها صدر قبيل سنوات كرواية \"الصعود إلى المئذنة\" لأحمد حرب، ورواية \"من يؤنس السيدة\" لمحمود الريماوي، ورواية \"رحلة السفرجل\" لوليد إخلاصي، ورواية \"مدينة الله \" لحسن حميد، و \"عندما تشيخ الذئاب\" لجمال ناجي. وبعضها صدر مرتين، أو أكثر، كرواية الطيب صالح، ورواية \"صهيل المسافات\" للكاتبة ليلى الأطرش. وبعض هذه الروايات لكتاب ينشرون للمرة الأولى، منهم: يحيى الحباشنة، وعماد مدانات، ومحمود الريماوي، الذي عرفناه كاتب قصة قصيرة من الدرجة الأولى.
