لقد شهدت الأراضي التي تشكل، اليوم، المملكة الأردنية الهاشمية، خلال العهدين البيزنطي والأموي (القرن الرابع الميلادي وحتى منتصف القرن الثامن الميلادي) ثلاث ظواهر هي : الاستقرار السكاني، والازدهار الاقتصادي، وانتشار المسيحية. وكان لإجتماع هذه الظواهر معا، أثر حاسم في بروز نشاط كثيف في بناء الكنائس في البلاد، وعمارة هذه الكنائس-وملحقاتها-هي الموضوع الذي يتناوله هذا الكتاب من الجوانب الإجتماعية والثقافية والمعمارية والفنية.
