يتابع المؤلف في هذا العمل نقده للفلسفة الغربية الذي ابتدأه بـ الأخلاق والعقل وتابعه في الفلسفة والمسألة الدينية، يتركز التحليل النقدي في هذا العمل على أهم القضايا التي أثارها بعض كبار الفلاسفة الغربيين في مجال الفكر السياسي، كقضية الأساس الأخلاقي للإلزام السياسي وحدود السلطة السياسية وإرتباط هذا بالديمقراطية، وقضية الحرية والحقوق الفردية، وقضية العدالة والمساواة، وقضية علاقة الفرد بالمجتمع، وقضية العلمانية وما يترتب عليها بخصوص تحديد دور الدين في المجال العام. يستأثر الفكر الليبرالي بالنصيب الأكبر من هذا التحليل النقدي، كونه الفكر السائد في الغرب، دون أن يعني هذا إهمال نقاد الفكر الليبرالي من أصحاب التوجه الماركسي وأصحاب النظرة الاجتماعية-المتحدية.
