يقول عثمان أمين أود أن أنبه القارئ إلى أن الرواقية كأكثر المذاهب الفلسفية اليونانية بعد أرسطو، هى فلسفة قامت كي تسد حاجة عملية قبل أن تستجيب لرغبة في المعرفة النظرية. وقد حاولت في هذا الكتاب أن أبسط العناصر الرئيسية في فلسفة الرواق كما استخلصتها من المصادر المتفرقة التى يستطاع الرجوع اليها في اللغات الأوبية قديمة وحديثة كما حاولت أن أتعقب ما خلفته تلك الفلسفة من آثار عميقة في المذاهب والمعتقدات الإنسانية مدى قرون وفي ذلك كله لم أحجم عن تاويل الرواقية كما بدت لي بعد الدرس والتلمل ولم أعرض عن فرض الفروض حيث تعوزنا المادة اليقينية ووضع الكتاب وترتيب أبوابه واختيار موضوعاته على نحو ما فعلت هو أيضا ضرب من التأويل.
