من الكتاب : مدينة أريحا مدينة كنعانية قديمة، يعدها الخبراء الأثريون أقدم مدن فلسطين، ويرجعون تاريخها إلى العصر الحجري، إلى عشرة آلاف عام قبل الميلاد، وأطلالها موجودة في تل السلطان على بعد كيلو متر شمال المدينة الحالية. وتسمية مدينة أريحا يعود إلى أصل كنعاني وهي تعني القمر، (يقول وليام هاولز في كتابه \"ما وراء التاريخ\" : إن أريحا العتيقة كان لها بالفعل كل خصائص المدينة الحقيقة. لذلك اعتبرت أريحا أقدم مدينة في التاريخ)، (ويقول غولاييف في كتابه \"المدن الأولى\" : كانت مساحة أريحا في الألفين الثامن والسابع قبل الميلاد تصل إلى 4 هكتارات، وعدد سكانها يتراوح بين ألفين وثلاثة آلاف نسمة، وكانت ذات مساكن متراصة من الطين، ومحاطة بسور حجري عال (حتى 4.5 متر) يصل سمكه إلى (1.7متر). وعثر على برج حجري، قطره (9 أمتار) وارتفاعه (9 أمتار أيضا). وكانت البلدة محاطة علاوة على السور بخندق عرضه (8 أمتار) وعمقه (2.6 متر).
