عنى هذا الكتاب بدراسة شخصية الشاعر الشهيد الحسين بن عبد الله بن رواحة الحموي، وحياته وشعره، إذ هو أحد الشعراء الأعلام في العصر الأيوبي في القرن السادس للهجرة، وقد أعجب الأدباء والنقاد قديما بشعره، وأشادوا به، ومدحوه، وعدوه من الشعراء المجيدين، حيث امتاز شعره بصدق العاطفة، وجمال التعبير وروعة التصوير، وهنا عقد الكاتب العزم على جمع شعره من مظانه المختلفة، وتحقيقه ودراسته، فبحث عن أخباره في عدد كبير من المراجع الأدبية والتاريخية والمجموعات الشعرية، وتتبع ما ورد من شعر الشاعر في الكتب المخطوطة والمطبوعة، وقد تسنى له جمع مجموعة كبيرة من شعره، فقام بدراسة هذا الشعر المجموع، وتحقيقه، واتبع في ذلك التحقيق المنهج العلمي.
