يتناول الكتاب فكرة الدراما بجميع عناصرها الملحمية والتاريخية كذلك يحاول أن يكشف أو يستوضح آراء المؤلفين في الدراما حتى نهاية القرن التاسع عشر، ويحدد في تلك الفترات الدراما العريقة الإغريقية والرومانية القديمة، والدراما كجنس أدبي، الملحمية والغنائية في الدراما : الدراما واحدة من ثلاثة أجناس أدبية أساسية-شعر غنائي ملحمة دراما، ويتنقل المؤلف في منهجية الدراما ويتخذ منها مادة للدراسة والمقارنة ويستعرض جميع أنواع الدراما وأجناسها عبر صفحات الكتاب المتكونة من 407 صفحات، ففي الجزء الأخير من الكتاب يصف الأنواع الدرامية التراجيديا الكوميديا الدراما فيصف التراجيديا : هو أول عمل مشهور في نظرية الدراما \"فن الشعر\" لارسطو الذي أطلع فيه على جوهر وخصوصية التراجيديا.
