ليس من المستطاع أن يستمد علم النفس الإيجابي من الظواهر النفسية وحدها، وإذا كان مستحيلا فأكثر منه استحالة أن يستمد من مظاهر المرض وحده إن هذا العلم يحتاج، فوق ذلك، إلى أساس تنظم هذه الظواهر بمقتضاه ؛ ولم يحجم \"ألفرد آدلر\" عن الاعتراف بهذه الحاجة، وذلك باعترافه بمنطق الصلات الاجتماعية في الدنيا على أنه حقيقة مطلقة من حقائق ما وراء الطبيعة، فإذا أقررنا هذا المبدأ وجب علينا أن ننتقل إلى النظر في نفسية الفرد من حيث علاقته به ؛ ويمكن تحديد الطريقة التي تربط حياة الفرد الداخلية بالكائن الاجتماعي في ثلاثة من \"اتجاهات الحياة\" - كما يسميها العلماء-وهي استجاباته العامة للمجتمع وللعمل وللحب.
