يعتبر الكتاب من هذه الدراسات القليلة التي رصدت أشكال السلفية وجماعاتها كحالة سوسيولوجية-سياسية من قبيل التجذر الراديكالي في المعارضة والممانعة. يبدأ الكتاب بإطار نظري مهم حول المسألة الدينية وعلم اجتماع الدين، وكيف غلبت على هذا العلم رؤية للدين على أنه ظاهرة فرعية قشرية مجرد بنية فوقية ليس لها سوى أهمية اجتماعية ثانوية حيث ستجعله الحداثة شيئا من مخلفات الماضي وهذا الانحياز جعل كثيرا من الدراسات تفهم ظاهرة الراديكالية الأصولية الإسلامية على أنها ظاهرة عدمية وخارج التاريخ وليس لها فهم اجتماعي ولا سياسي. وهذا فحوى الجدل مثلا بين الباحثين المرموقين الفرنسيين ألفييه روا ورد فرانسوا بورغا.
