يتحدث الكتاب عن الصحافة فهي مهنة بقيامها على جمع وتحليل الأخبار والتحقق من مصداقيتها وتقديمها للجمهور، سواء أن كانت هذه الأخبار متعلقة بأحداث سياسية أو اقتصادية أو ثقافية أو رياضية أو اجتماعية أوغيرها. وذلك بغرض تأسيس رأي عام على وعي بالواقع المحيط، وحالة من الشفافية تضمن وجود رقابة شعبية فعالة على الآداء السلطوي والإداري. إن الصحافة بالمعنى السابق حرفية تسعى إلى الحياد، ولكنها في ذات الوقت تبقى متحيزة، لأن الأمر لا يقتصر على مجرد تقديم المعلومات بل يتعداه إلى تداول الأراء بشأنها في صورة مقالات وأعمدة وتحقيقات وتحليلات إخبارية، والتحيز هنا ليس بالمعنى السلبي الذي يشتمل على طمس وإقصاء وتزييف الحقائق، ولكن بالمعنى الإيجابي الذي يحمل دلالات كفاحية.
