لا ندري على وجه التحقيق أي الناس كان أسبق إلى معرفة الحديد وتعدينه، فرغما عن أن مركباته وخاماته كثيرة ومنتشرة في أماكن عديدة من سطح الأرض، إلا أن الإنسان عرفه أول ما عرفه كمعدن خالص تتساقط به السماء فيما ينزل عنها من الشهب. واكتشف في مصر أول وأقدم شاهد على استخدام الإنسان للحديد، إذ اكتشف مجموعتين من الخرزات الحديدية، واحدة مكونة من سبع خرزات والأخرى من خرزتين، يرجع تاريخها إلى أكثر من خمسة آلاف سنة خلت، وقبل أن يبدأ التاريخ بالأسر المصرية القديمة، ولقد فعل الصدأ فعله في هذه الخرزات، فتحولت جميعها إلى أكسيد الحديد، غير أن الكيماويين الذين قاموا بتحليلها أمكنهم أن يتعرفوا أن هذه الخرزات صنعت من قضيت من معدن الحديد.
