استخدمت الشبكات الاجتماعية كآلية لحشد الجماهير ودعوتهم إلى الثورة يوم 25 يناير، حيث استفادت الحركات والجماعات التي دعت إلى ذلك بخبرات سابقة، من أهمها الدعوة إلى إضراب السادس من إبريل 2008، كما تمت الاستفادة بعدم كفاية العمل على الإنترنت والشبكات الاجتماعية لتحريك الواقع على الأرض. ومن هنا، فقد قام بعض النشطاء بتوزيع آلاف الدعوات في مناطق الشرابية والوايلي وباب الشعرية بالقاهرة والمحافظات، للمشاركة فيما أسموه الانتفاضة الشعبية يوم 25 يناير، وقد تراجع دور هذه الشبكات بشكل ملحوظ، حيث اعتمدت \"حركة تمرد\" على آلية الحشد الشعبي من خلال جمع التوقيعات على استمارات الحركة، وهو ما يعود بالثورة المصرية إلى توظيف آليات الثورات الشعبية، كما حدث فى ثورة 1919، إلا أنه لا يمكن إغفال أن \"تمرد\" قامت بإطلاق موقع خاص بها جمعت عليه 2 مليون توقيع إلكترونى، علاوة على قاعدة بيانات لكل الموقعين على استماراتها.
