قد تكون الفيروسات موجودة منذ تطور الخلايا الحية الأولى منذ الخليقة ؛ فهي توجد حيث وجدت الحياة، إلا أن أصلها غير واضح لأنها لم تشكل حفريات، لذلك فالتقنيات الجزيئية كانت وسيلة مفيدة للغاية للتحقيق في كيفية نشوئها. هذه التقنيات تعتمد على توافر الدي إن إيه والآر إن إيه (الشريط الوراثي) الفيروسي القديم، لكن لسوء الحظ فإن معظم الفيروسات التي تم حفظها وتخزينها في المختبرات تعود لأقل من 90 عاما. اختلفت الآراء حول كون الفيروسات كائنات حية أو بنى عضوية فقط تتفاعل معها ؛ فتم وصفها بالكائنات على حافة الحياة، وذلك نظرا لأنها تشبه الكائنات الحية بامتلاكها جينات وتتطور عن طريق الانتقاء الطبيعي.
