صدرت الطبعة الأولى بالإنجليزية في عام 1953، وصدرت الترجمة العربية لأول مرة في عام 1964، لكن مثل هذا الكتاب لا يفقد أهميته بالتقادم، فيمكننا تشبيه قيمته بالماء نفسه الذي يتجدد منذ بدء الخليقة عبر دورة لا تنقضي، ويمكن إرجاع تميز الكتاب لعاملين : أولهما : موضوعه، فالماء صنو الحياة ولولا وجود الماء على كوكب الأرض لما كان صالحا للحياة .. وثانيهما : المؤلف نفسه، طومسون كينج، وهو في الأصل مهندس يهوى الأدب، جمع في شخصيته بين العالم والأديب، وقد ألف هذا الكتاب بعقل العالم وانضباط المهندس وأيضا بخيال الأديب، وقد انعكست شخصيته على تبويب الكتاب، وطريقة التناول والعرض والتحليل.
