Overview
عاش ابن باجة في عصر دولة المرابطين، حيث كان المحافظون والمقلدون في أوج مجدهم، ولكنهم في نفس الوقت كانوا في حالة صراع دائم فيما بينهم من جهة، وبينهم وبين المفكرين الأحرار من جهة أخرى. وكان يشار إلى الاختلاف بين الطرفين بتعبير الجمهور والخاصة. ويبدو أن انتصار الجمهور قد بلغ أوجه خلال ظهور ابن باجة كفيلسوف : الأولى هو أنه كان أول فيلسوف في الأندلس مهد الطريق للفلاسفة الآخرين من بعده كابن طفيل وابن رشد وابن خلدون. والثانية هي أنه كان أول فيلسوف يأتي مباشرة بعد هجمات الغزالي الشرسة على الفلسفة والفلاسفة على السواء.
