يشار إليه في العالم العربي باسم \"المعلم الثاني\" (بعد أرسطو \"المعلم الأول\") بسبب تعليقاته الواسعة على أرسطو وعمله في المنطق، وهو معروف أيضا بأنه \"الأب\" للإفلاطونية الإسلامية، كان أول فيلسوف إسلامي يميز بين الفلسفة والدين، وأعطى الأسبقية على الوحي كمصدر للحقيقة. كان يعمل على التوفيق بين فلسفة الفيلسوف أرسطو وأفلاطون مع عقيدة القرآن، أصبح مفهومه عن وجود الجوهر أساسا للميتافيزيقيا في ابن سينا، والتي أثرت لاحقا على اللاهوت المسيحي لتوما الأكويني.
