Overview
يؤرخ الكتاب لبدايات فن المسرح العربي، فسنوات الحرب العالمية الأولى كانت لها انعكاساتها على مصر، حيث أعلنت الأحكام العرفية، وفرضت قيود على الإضاءة بالمسارح والملاهي، كما امتلأت الشوارع بجنود بريطانيا التي كانت تحتل البلاد آنذاك، ورغم تلك الظروف شهدت تلك الفترة انتعاش المسرح المصري. ويرى مؤلف الكتاب فؤاد رشيد أنه في هذه الفترة انتهت كبرى العقبات في سبيل قيام التمثيل العربي بظهور أول ممثلة مصرية هي منيرة المهدية، التي تعد من أكثر المطربات المصريات شهرة في بداية القرن العشرين، وكانت ندا قويا وعقبة كبرى أمام صعود أم كلثوم ولقبت بسلطانة الطرب حيث كان صوتها قويا وجذابا.
