يركز علم التفسير جل اهتمامه على تفسير القرآن الكريم، ويدل مصطلح التفسير لغة على أنه تحليل غموض اللفظ ومجمل معاني الجمل والمصطلحات وغموضها، أما التفسير اصطلاحا فإنه يعني تحليل معاني مصطلحات وجمل القرآن الكريم وتوضيح المطلوب والمراد منها. وكما يركز علم التفسير على جميع علوم القرآن الكريم وضروبه، ويشرح ويحلل ويستنبط الأحكام من القرآن الكريم، ويهدف التفسير بشكل عام إلى الأخذ بيد المسلم لفهم أمور دينه، وتدبر واستيعاب القرآن الكريم وآياته، ويصنف علم التفسير إلى ثلاثة أنواع : التفسير الموضوعي، التفسير التحليلي، التفسير الإجمالي، التفسير المقارن.
