تطمح هذه المحاولة إلى تعريف توما الأكويني تعريفا إجماليا سريعا. وقد أحصيت تأليفه في جدول يرقى إلى سنة 1319، وهي بمجملها من قلمه ؛ ويمكن أن نميز في هذه التآليف ما كان منها تعليقا وتفسيرا، وما كان منها تأليفا وتصنيفا، فالتعليق والتفسير تناولا \"الكتاب\" (المقدس) وكتب الأئمة من أصحاب الرأي إذ ذاك، والتأليف والتصنيف تناولا العقيدة المسيحية من ناحيتها الإيمانية والعقلية، سواء كان ذلك لعرضها أو للدفاع عنها، والتفاسير، إجمالا، من عهد توما الأول، أما التصانيف فمن عهد النضج، وقد بقي أهمها- الخلاصة اللاهوتية- ناقصا. وقد تناول المحقق دراسة الأكويني في المجالات التالية : تآليفه، توما والفلاسفة، توما والفلسفة، مع مختارات من كتاباته في : تفسير أرسطو، وردوده على الفلاسفة، وقضايا فلسفية أخرى.
