يقدم عميد الأدب العربي في هذا الكتاب مجموعة من المقالات المجمعة، تنوعت موضوعاتها ما بين النقد الأدبي، النقدية الساخرة التي تتراوح ما بين الجد في الحديث والهزل في بحث القضايا الأساسية التي تهم المجتمع وتنقذه من جهة أخرى، واستعراض المناخ الثقافي المصري، وبين عرض لمشكلات بلاده الاجتماعية والسياسية التي زادت بدرجة كبيرة قبل ثورة يوليو وجعلته يصف الحياة في مصر في أولى مقالات الكتاب بأنها «حزينة». وقد ظهرت سخريته اللاذعة في انتقاده لكثير من الأوضاع التي لم تعجبه، معلنا عن آرائه بصراحة وموضوعية، وهو الأمر الذي كثيرا ما جر عليه المتاعب مع السلطة وأثار عليه القراء والنقاد، ولكن «طه حسين»-كما أعلن أكثر من مرة-لم يكن يسعى لأن ينافق قارئه أو يخدعه ؛ فيكتب له ما يسعده، بل كان باحثا جادا عن الحقيقة، معلنا عنها واضحة جلية لا «بين بين».
