يهتم علم اللغة بالدراسة الصوتية ودراسة تركيب الكلمة وتركيب الجملة وعلم الدلالة ... إلخ.، ولكن ليس من اختصاصه أن يدرس كيف يفهم السامع ما يقوله المتكلم، أي كيف يحلل سلسلة الأصوات المتوالية التي تتلقاها أذناه إلى وحدات يستخلص منها المعاني التي أراد المتكلم نقلها إليه، ولا كيف يخطط المتكلم لنطق الجمل للتعبير عن أفكاره، وكيف يختار المفردات اللازمة، والصعوبات التي يوجهها عند النطق، والأخطاء التي يقع فيها، فكل هذا من اختصاص علم اللغة النفسي.
