هو من الدراسات الرائدة والهامة التي تفصل مسألة التنقيب عن الآثار ويبدأ الكتاب في الفصل الأول عن الإجابة على هذا السؤال : لماذا ننقب عن الآثار ؟ والفصل الثاني يحدثنا عن نشأة فن التنقيب عن الآثار وتاريخه، والفصل الثالث كيف تختفي المدن والمباني، والفصل الرابع يحدثنا عن تكوين الطبقات في مواقع أخرى، والفصل الخامس يعرض لنا نماذج للمواد المكونبة لبعض طبقات التربة والفصل السادس في تحديد موقع الأثر، والفصل السابع عن الوسائل المستخدمة في تاريخ الآثار، والفصل الثامن عن الشروط الواجب اتباعها عند الحصول على تصريح إجراء حفائر، والفصل التاسع عن إعداد المنقب الأثري، وغير ذلك من المحاور الهامة يتناولها الكتاب في بقية الفصول.
