في هذا الكتاب يتناول المؤلف عباس محمود العقاد أحد أهم الموضوعات الفكرية والفلسفية وهى نشأة العقيدة الإلهية، ويبدأ في تناول الموضوع من البداية منذ اتخذ الإنسان ربا إلى أن عرف الله الأحد، واهتدى إلى نزاهة التوحيد، وقد بدأه المؤلف العقاد بأصل الاعتقاد في الأقوام البدائية، ثم لخص عقائد الأقوام التي تقدمت في عصور الحضارة، ثم عقائد المؤمنين بالكتب السماوية، وشفع ذلك بمذاهب الفلاسفة الأسبقين، ومذاهب الفلاسفة التابعين وختمه بمذاهب الفلسفة العصرية، وكلمة العلم الحديث في مسألة الإيمان، وكانت غايته منه العناية بالعقيدة الإلهية دون غيرها، فلم يقصد فيه إلى تفصيل شعائر الأديان ولا إلى تقسيم أصول العبادات لأن هذا الموضوع على حصره في نطاقه هو أوسع من أن يستقصى كل الاستقصاء في كتاب.
