يسجل هذا الكتاب لحقبة تاريخية مهمة فى حياة مصر بقلم اللورد كرومر، الذى عاش بها وحكمها قرابة ربع قرن من عام 1877 م، على عام 1879 م، كمراقب مالى، ثم من 1883 م، إلى 1907 كمعتمد بريطانى، ونشر اللورد كرومر هذا الكتاب بعد خلع عباس حلمى الثانى عام 1914 م، وكان قد ألف مسودته بعد عودته إلى انجلترا عقب استقالته من منصبه كمعتمد بريطانى لدى مصر عام 1907، بسبب حادثة دنشواى الشهيرة، وظلت المسودة حبيسة أوراقه الخاصة حتى أفرج عنها بعد خلع عباس الثانى، وأضاف إليها ملاحظات عدة ثم نشر الكتاب عام 1915 م، وتوفى بعد نشره بسنتين.
