تهدف النظرية في العلم التجريبي إلى تطوير إطار تحليلي للعالم الواقعي، وذلك بتصور العالم بصورة مجردة لفئات الأشياء والعلاقات بينها، والأطر النظرية هي افتراضات حول طبيعة هذه الفئات والعلاقات بينها هذه الافتراضات تعتبر موجهات للبحث للنظر في صحتها أو صحة نتائجها وهكذا فإن النظرية تؤثر في البحث من حيث تحديد المشكلات والموضوعات، وتوجيه البحث للوصول إلى علاقات مثبتة، كما أن نتائج اختبار النظريات حول الوقائع تؤدي إلى وضع افتراضات جديدة وهكذا تمتزج النظرية والبحث والحقائق الموضوعية في نسيج من العملية إذ أن النظرية توجه البحث، والبحث يسعی للوصول إلى الحقائق، والحقائق تؤثر في النظرية، هذا التفاعل يؤدي إلى تطوير العلم التجريبي.
