يعد \"علم المرجعيات\" من العلوم المعاونة على بناء المعرفة وتأصيلها، وهو أحد فروع علوم المكتبات، الذى يعنى كما أشرنا بدراسة طائفة من المواد بالمكتبة تمتلك صفات متميزة، تجعلها ذات أهمية خاصة في تأدية المكتبات للوظائف المنوطة بها، كما تتميز بعدد من العمليات المكتبية والإجراءات الفنية والمالية، وبعض المهمات الإدارية، فتوضع موادها عادة في مكان متميز بالمكتبة لسهولة الاطلاع والاستخدام، وقد يشرف عليها قسم خاص، ويكلف بها ذوو مؤهلات خاصة، كما أن أكثر موادها لا يسمح بإعارته خارج المكتبة.
