يعتبر اللعب عمليات دينامية تعبر عن حاجات الفرد إلى الاستمتاع والسرور بدافع النشاط التلقائي للترويح والترفيه عن النفس واللعب وسيلة لكشف الذات وتنمية المواهب عند الأشخاص، ويمهد سبل بناء الذات المتكاملة في ظل الظروف التي تزداد تعقيدا وتزداد معها تكييفا. كانت المحاولات الأولى لتفسير اللعب على يد أفلاطون والذي أدرك القيمة العملية للعب، كما رأى أرسطو ضرورة تشجيع الأطفال على اللعب بالأشياء التي يستعملونها ويرى شكسبير أن اللعب هو المهم. كما نادى فروبل وبيستالوزي وروسو بإدخال اللعب في اهتمامات الطفل الطبيعية ومراحل نموه.
