يستعرض هذا الكتاب كيف تشكلت الحملة الدولية لإنقاذ هذا التراث العظيم من الضياع. لم يكن مشروع السد العالى مجرد مشروع اقتصادي عملاق سيؤدى بالضرورة إلى تغيير خريطة مصر الزراعية والصناعية فقط، وإنما كان ضرورة ملحة لثورة يوليو 1952 التي كانت فى أمس الاحتياج إلى عمل قومي يلتف حوله كل مصري ومصرية، وعلى ذلك جاء مشروع السد العالي نموذجاً لتحدي هذه الروح الجديدة للقوى الخارجية. وعلى الرغم من جملة الفوائد التي كان من المؤكد أنها ستعود على البلاد من خلال ذلك المشروع الطموح، فإن الآثار السلبية أيضا كانت معلومة للجميع وجاء على رأسها غرق كل المعابد والجبانات الأثرية التي تقع خلف السد.
