أراد المفكر محمد حمزة من بحثه هذا الاهتمام بمسألة «الحديث النبوي»، كما حرص على استجلاء مكانته في الفكر الإسلامي وقد دعاه إلى ذلك عدة أسباب، أهمها ان الحديث النبوي يمثل نصا ثانيا لا يختلف في كثير من الحالات تعامل المسلم معه تقديسا وتأويلا واستلهاما، والسبب الثاني أنه لم يحف الخلاف في الفكر الإسلامي، قديما وحديثا بأحد النصوص التي قدسها الضمير الإسلامي، مثلما حف بنصوص الحديث الشريف، إن التراث الإسلامي يضم في طياته مواقف نقدية كثيرة رفضت حجية الحديث وطعنت في أمانة نقلته، وأهملت الحديث في التشريع مناديه بأن يكون في القرآن غنى عن أحاديث وسنن يصعب التعرف على مدى صدقها.
