الحسين بن الضحاك أحد شعراء العصر العباسي، ينتمي إلى تلك الفئة من الشعراء التي عرفت باسم عصبة الجان والتي من أبرز أركانها أبي نواس ووالبة بن الحباب، واللافت في الأمر أنه وإن لم يبلغ شأو أترابه في الخلاعة والمجون فقد خص من بينهم جميعا بلقب الخليع، حتى غلب عليه دون اسمه وسائر ألقابه، والحسين شاعر عمر طويلا وعاصر عددا كبيرا من الخلفاء عرف الحظوة لديهم وكان جليسهم والنديم باستثناء المأمون الذي أبعده لشدة مناصرته لأخيه الأمين.
