يسعى هذا الكتاب إلى إعادة تقييم الجدل الأدبي بين النقاد العرب القدماء حول أبى تمام والبديع، كما تحاول أن تلقى ضوءا جديدا على إنجاز أبي تمام الشعري في كل من ديوان وحماسته على السواء، فهذه الدراسة إذن تنظر إلى إنجاز أبي تمام الشعرى بما هو \"شعر على الشعر\" أو بما هو تفسير للشعر، ذلك أن هذا الشعر كان من ناحية مفتاحا لفك شفرات التقليد الشعري للبادية الجاهلية أمام الخلفاء العباسيين المسلمين وأفراد حاشيتهم المتحضرين ورعاياهم من أهل المدن، كما كان هو نفسه، من ناحية مقابلة، شفرة جديدة تستوعب الخبرة العربية الإسلامية المعاصرة في الشكل الأدبي القديم، أي القصيدة.
