\"يعتري الحديث عن أصول أهل السواد الكثير من الغموض والتعقيد ؛ لتردد الأقوال فيها بين العروبة والعجمة والخلط بينهما، ولعل ذلك بسبب تداخل الأجناس وتعدد الأعراق وتعاقبها على أرض السواد عبر التاريخ. وقد اختلف الباحثون في الأصل الذي انحدر منه أهل السواد، فنجد أن أكثر العلماء نصوا على أن السواد أو البطائح بين العراقين منزل النبط، قال الخليل :\"النبط والنبيط : كالحبش والحبيش في التقدير، وسموا به لأنهم أول من استنبط الأرض\"
