يكرس طه حسين كتابه هذا للبحث في الفتنة الكبرى، التي حصلت أيام عثمان رضي الله عنه، وامتدت آثارها إلى أيام علي رضي الله عنه، ومازال المسلمون يحصدون آثارها إلى الآن، وهو في كتابه هذا ينظر إلى هذه القضية نظرة خالصة مجردة، لا تصدر عن عاطفة ولا هوى، ولا تتأثر بالإيمان ولا بالدين، وإنما هي نظرة المؤرخ الذي يجرد نفسه تجريداً كاملا من النزعات والعواطف والأهواء مهما تختلف مظاهرها ومصادرها وغاياتها، لذا تراه يقف أولا عند تجربة حكم الشيخين أبو بكر وعمر رضي الله عنهما وقفة متأنية لاستقراء إمكانية بقائها، والوقوف على أهم انعكاساتها، فهذه الوقفة تتيح للباحث فقه هذه المشكلات الكثيرة التي ثارت من نفسها، أو أثيرت أيام عثمان لا لأن عثمان كان هو الخليفة، بل لأن الوقت كان قد آن لبثور بعض هذه المشكلات من تلقاء نفسه، وليثير الناس بعضها الآخر.
