يرصد هذا الكتاب إشارات بلينيوس (23 ق.م-79م) الملقب بالأكبر، تمييزا له عن قريبه والابن الذي تبناه بلينيوس الأصغر، كاتبا ومؤرخا طبيعيا وعالما مهتما بالنباتات، إضافة إلى كونه قائدا عسكريا وبحريا. عاش الكاتب في القرن الأول من الإمبراطورية الرومانية، واشتهر بمؤلفه الذي يحمل اسم \"التاريخ الطبيعي\". كان كتابه \"موسوعة\"، بمعاييرنا الحديثة، جمع فيها قدرا كبيرا من المعلومات التي كانت متاحة له في ذلك الوقت. وقد اعتمد في كتابه هذا على أفضل ما وجده من مراجع ومصادر. ويشير بلينيوس في كتابه إلى موارد شبه الجزيرة العربية النباتية والحيوانية والمعدنية، وإلى سكانها وجغرافيتها، كما ضمن حديثه بعض الإشارات التاريخية.
