كتبت الكثير من الكتب والدراسات التي تناولت جوانب متعددة من حياة وفلسفة أبي العلاء المعري، وتضاربت آراء الدارسين الذين تناولوه ؛ فحكم عليه بالإلحاد حينا وبالكفر أحيانا، بينما رفعه آخرون إلى مصاف كبار المبدعين وعظماء الفلاسفة، معتبرين فكره أيقونة من أيقونات الفكر التحرري والثوري، غير أن كتاب «طه حسين» لا يعد تعمقا في سيرة أبي العلاء الشخصية أو تحليلا لأفكاره الفلسفية، بقدر ما هو مشاركة نقدية ووجدانية من إنسان تشابهت خصائصه العقلية وظروف حياته مع إنسان من عصر آخر ؛ فكل منهما تائه في بحور الشك، متأمل في عالم الطبيعة، مشيد بشخصيته الفريدة عالما جديدا، هو وحده من يدرك تفاصيله.
