في كتاب في أقل من مائة صفحة يتحدث العقاد عن بلال بن رباح باعتباره واحدا من أهم شخصيات التاريخ الإسلامي، وكعادته لا يتطرق العقاد غلي الشخصية من حيث هي سيرة حياة تبدأ من مكان وزمان لتنتهي إلي زمان ومكان آخرين، بل إن العقاد يتحدث عن الشخصية من حيث جوانب ساهمت في نشأتها ونموها وتطورها علي النحو الذي عرفناه عنها، يبدأ العقاد كلامه عن مسألة العنصر يتحدث فيه عن عناصر البشر المختلفة من بيض وسود غيرهم، ثم يتحدث عن العنصر الزنجي الذي ينحدر منه صاحب السيرة، ثم تحدث عن العرب والأجناس، تحدث فيه عن التفرقة العنصرية في حضارات مختلفة، فكانت التفرقة عندهم جميعا علي أساس اللون، فكان السود دائما هم أصحاب النصيب الأوفى من مصائب هذه التفرقة بل هم أصحاب المصيبة دائما.
