يمثل هذا الكتاب سردا نزيها ودقيقا لكل مرحلة من مراحل ذلك الإنحسار ويتضمن الكتاب أيضا عرضا للتقارير التي كتبها بارسونز للحكومة البريطانية وسجلا لما قاله للشاه ولما شعر به شخصيا وفكر به في حينه ويتساءل بارسونز قائلا لماذا فشلت أنا رغم كل خبرتي في المنطقة من رؤية ما كان يبدو وأمام ناظري وشيك الوقوع ؟ ويجيب عن ذلك بأن سبب فشله لم يكن في الواقع نتيجة نقص المعلومات بل في قصور تفسيرها إذ كان ذلك التفسير متأثرا بالمبادئ التاريخية العامة بدلا من إستنباط الدرس التاريخي الملائم من ماضي إيران لقد حاول الشاه جاهدا تحويل إيران إلى شيء ما هي ليست منه بشيء كان يحاول تحويلها إلى دولة ذات إقتصاد صناعي حديث.
