يقسم المؤلف الكتاب إلى أبواب، وجعل لكل باب عنوانا يحمل إشارة مختصرة إلى ما سيذكره من نصوص في الباب ويبدأ الاستدلال على المسألة بآيات القرآن، ثم يورد كلام النبي -صلى الله علية وسلم- ثم يذكر كلام أئمة السلف، وفي أثناء عرض الأدلة فإنه يعلق عليها ويذكر شبه المعطلة ويرد عليها، ويعد الكتاب مرجعا حافلا بالنصوص لمن يريد الاطلاع على أقوال السلف في المعطلة خصوصا، كما أنه يعتبر مرجعا مهما في معرفة طريقة الرد على أهل البدعة عموما، وعلى الجهمية على وجه الخصوص.
