يتناول هذا الكتاب الوجودية تعريفا كافيا شافيا فإن كلمة الوجود بالمعنى الفلسفي الذي اتخذته في هذه الأيام قد استخدمت بل اكتشفت، لأول مرة على يد كيركجور، ولكن هل نستطيع أن نسمي كيركجور وجوديا ؟، إن كيركجور لم يكن يريد أن يكون فيلسوفا، بل أنه يكون فيلسوفا ذا مذهب محدد، وهاجم هيدجر في إحدى محاضراته ماسماه بالوجودية، على حين أكد يسبرز أن الوجودية موت لفلسفة الوجود، ولهذا نرى أنفسنا مدفوعين إلى أن نقصر في إطلاق هذه الكلمة على هؤلاء الذين نستطيع أن نسميهم مدرسة باريس الفلسفية وهي المدرسة التي تضم سارتر، وسيمون دي بوفوار، وميرلوبونتي.
