يتناول هذا الكتاب تاريخ الأندلس الأدبي من الفتح حتى سقوط الخلافة مع كون هذه الحقبة من تاريخ الأندلس تمثل عصرين مختلفين العصر الأول هو ما يسمى بعصر الولاة وهو الذي يبدأ بالفتح الإسلامي وينتهي بإقامة عبد الرحمن الداخل لدولة بني أمية في الأندلس أما العصر الثاني فهو ما يسمى بعصر بني أمية وهو الذي يبدأ بقيام عبد الرحمن الداخل بالأمر وينتهى بسقوط الخلافة الأموية بالأندلس وقيام الحكم الجمهوري بقرطبة على يد ابن جهور.
