يتناول الكتاب نوعين من صعوبات التعلم، أولهما صعوبات التعلم التطورية التي تتمثل في صعوبات المعالجة المعرفية الخاصة بواحدة أو أكثر من عمليات : الانتباه، أو الإدراك، أو الذاكرة، أو التفكير أو اللغة الشفوية. وينتج عن هذه الصعوبات ويترتب عليها النوع الثاني وهو صعوبات التعلم الأكاديمية أو المحددة التي تتعلق. ويظهر بنتيجة الارتباط بتعلم مادة أو أكثر من المواد الدراسيـة أخصها القراءة أو الكتابة أو الرياضيات أو هي جميعا والتفاعل الذي يقوم بين هذين النوعين مشكلات انفعالية واجتماعية متعددة أصعبها تدني تقدير الذات والانعزال لدرجة الاكتئاب والتسرع الذي يرقى إلى مستوى الطيش وتراكم الإحباطات التي تمهد لظهور العدوانية.
