مؤلف هذا الكتاب الأستاذ يوسف أسعد داغر في بيروت، وكتابه هذا هو معجم فريد حيث يتناول الأسماء المستعارة وأسماء أصحابها في الثقافة العربية المعاصرة، دون أن يخلو من ذكر الأسماء المستعارة لبعض المشهورين من القدامى مع ذكر أسمائهم الحقيقية معتمدا كمدخل أساسي اسم العائلة أو الشهرة مرفقا به تاريخ سنة الولادة والوفاة مع بعض المعلومات الأساسية، ويشير الأستاذ داغر إلى الاكتفاء بالاسم المستعار أو بقاء المقال غفلا من التوقيع، فقد يفقد البحث شيئا من قيمته وينتقص من شأنه بعض الشيء مع أن الأقدمين أوصوا بأن ينظر المرء إلى ما قيل وليس إلى من قال، وإلى جانب ذلك أدخل المؤلف طائفة من أسماء الجمعيات العلمية والأدبية والرابطات التعليمية والمؤتمرات الأدبية والثقافية فعرف بها تعريفا مقتضبا مفيدا، كل ذلك بأسلوب سلس واضعا بين يدي القارئ العشرات من المصادر والمراجع التي تساعده في بحثه واستقصاءاته.
